District Marriage Registers & District Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West (Ontario) 1786 - 1870: What are They and Why are They Important?

Date Range:

1786 - 1870

Resource Format:

  • Online

  • Canada

Record Type:

  • Marriage

Additional Information:

  • Kingston and Frontenac County were in the Midland District
  • unfortunately, the Midland District marriage register has not survived
  • if you're looking for a Midland District marriage, check the neighboring districts (i.e. Johnstown District and Bathurst District) because many marriages were performed by circuit riders; they were recorded in the district where the minister lived as opposed to the place where the marriage occurred
  • it was also fairly common for non-conformist ministers to perform Anglican and/or Catholic marriages, so don't limit your search by denomination for these early records
  • the article includes much more information, maps of the districts in 1825 and 1845, and name indexes to the volumes
  • if you find an ancestor's name in one of the indexes, check the library catalogue to see if the book is in our collection. The marriage registers are also for sale in print or in CD-ROM format (see the article, above.)
