“Nora, who would give a grumpy old fart a free pint? Nobody! So that’s why I have to make somebody laugh, to get a free pint. ”
Kingstonian Tony Dowling tells Margi McKay about Bob Earls, nicknamed “The Earl of Rathcoole”, who lived in the Dowlings’ chicken coop in Rathcoole, Ireland for a time in the 1960s.
Remembered fondly as a hobo, a gardener and a handyman, a gravedigger, a storyteller and a drunk, when Bob was cleaned up for Christmas dinner he looked like Errol Flynn. Tony describe some of Bob’s adventures in Rathcoole and nearby Saggart and Dublin.
